The name Aughagower comes from the Irish Achadh Fhobhair, meaning 'the plain of the wells'. St Patrick baptised the first converts at one of these wells. It is said that St Patrick spent time here among the swelling green fields, streams and wells in silent prayer and meditation, making it his own spiritual village.
