John, the Hay Maker

John - the Hay Maker

Farmer John rests to enjoy his pipe.  The binding around his legs is to prevent escaping mice and rats (disturbed in their nests when hay is moved) from running up his legs!  John rests against a Hay Cock which was the traditional way of harvesting the hay before the advent of baling equipment. This process required the help of the whole family as well as neighbours and friends.
